After an earthquake in Ecuador this week, a 4 year old rescue Labrador named Dayko is being called a hero after dying in the line of duty, rescuing seven people.
Dayko searched endlessly through the rubble for possible survivors from the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that occurred last week in Ecuador. The death, which according to the fire department’s Facebook page, has been labeled as heat stroke and respiratory failure. Dayko had spent over three of his four years of life working with the fire service as a rescue animal.
The April 16th earthquake has killed over six hundred people and injured more than two-thousand. Power outages along the coast, building damage, and serious destruction to roads have also been reported.
The cost of reconstruction has been estimated to be in the billions of dollars.
But for at least seven people, they have a second chance, thanks to Dayko. The fire service mourns the loss of their hard working dog and is grateful for all the service he provided.
